Former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers has decided to resign from his academic and administrative positions at Harvard University following the emergence of his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who was found dead in prison.

The network of relationships centered around the US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has resulted in a prominent figure from the worlds of politics and academia stepping down from his post. Former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers has decided to leave his academic and administrative positions at Harvard University after his ties to Epstein were revealed to the public.
In his statement, Summers announced that he would retire from the university at the end of the current academic year, saying, "I am grateful to the thousands of students and colleagues at Harvard, where I have taught since arriving as a graduate student 50 years ago." Summers also added, "I look forward to researching, analyzing, and commenting on various global economic issues as a professor emeritus, without formal responsibilities."
ALSO STEPPING DOWN FROM ADMINISTRATIVE ROLES
Harvard spokesperson Jason Newton confirmed Summers' resignation, stating that he would be stepping down not only from his academic roles but also from his administrative duties. Newton noted that Harvard Kennedy School Dean Jeremy Weinstein had accepted Summers' request to step down as co-director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government as part of an ongoing review within the university regarding the Jeffrey Epstein documents. Newton also noted that Summers would be on leave until the end of the academic year.
HAD COME TO THE FOREFRONT WITH EPSTEIN DOCUMENTS
Summers, who served as Treasury Secretary during the administration of former US President Bill Clinton and held the presidency of Harvard University between 2001 and 2006, had been the target of intense criticism following the release of the Epstein documents.
The documents revealed that Summers had a close personal relationship with Epstein spanning many years, that they were in regular contact until shortly before Epstein's arrest, and that Summers had received advice from him regarding his private life. It was also reported that Summers was named as a backup executor in a 2014 draft of Epstein's will. Following the scandal, Summers had also been forced to resign from his positions at several US-based media organizations.
