In a statement issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), it was noted that volcanic ash from the eruption at Mount Ulawun in Papua New Guinea is estimated to have reached a height of 15,000 meters.
The statement noted that the possibility of the eruption triggering tsunami waves that could reach the Japanese coast is being taken into consideration.
Stating that no "abnormal rise" in sea level has been detected, the statement urged residents living along the coastline to remain alert to warnings.
The statement indicated that potential tsunami waves could first reach the Izu Islands, located off the southern region of the capital, Tokyo.
