European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has reported being extremely concerned about the escalating tensions and the increasing cross-border violence between Israel and Hezbollah following an airstrike in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, which caused civilian casualties. In a written statement, Borrell recalled that 3 of those who lost their lives in the airstrike on the southern suburbs of Beirut on September 20 were children, stating, "The EU is extremely concerned about the escalating tensions in Lebanon and the increasing cross-border violence between Israel and Hezbollah."

Noting that attacks are continuing in Israel and Lebanon, Borrell assessed that "a ceasefire must be achieved on the Blue Line, just as it must be in Gaza." Pointing out that civilians are the ones most affected by the attacks, Borrell emphasized the importance of activating diplomatic mediation efforts to prevent a full-scale war in the region.

Furthermore, Borrell stated that the issue would be high on the EU's agenda at the 79th United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

AIRSTRIKE ON BEIRUT

A total of 45 people, including 3 children and 7 women, lost their lives in an airstrike carried out by the Israeli military on the southern suburbs of Beirut on September 20. Hezbollah announced that 15 of its members, including high-ranking military commander Ibrahim Akil, were killed in the attack. A total of 84 people lost their lives in incidents involving the detonation of pagers and radios in Lebanon on September 17-18.

ESCALATING CONFLICTS

Clashes that have intensified from time to time between the parties have been ongoing on the Israel-Lebanon border since October 8, 2023. The fact that both sides are targeting civilians is causing concern within the international community. Borrell's calls once again highlight the need to increase diplomatic initiatives to ensure peace in the region.
