As global reactions to Israel's massacres in Gaza continue, a new state has joined those that have decided to recognize Palestine. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot announced in a post on the social media platform X that Belgium will recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly to be held this month.

Reminding that Belgium has international obligations, including the duty to prevent the risk of genocide in the face of Israel's acts of violence, Prevot stated, "Taking these responsibilities into account, we had to take strong decisions to increase pressure on the Israeli government and Hamas. This is not to punish the Israeli people, but to ensure that the Israeli government complies with international and humanitarian law and to try to change the situation on the ground."

Stating that 12 strict sanctions will be implemented in this context, including trade restrictions on Israeli companies and travel restrictions on Israeli settlers and far-right ministers, Prevot also expressed that additional measures will be taken to prevent the glorification of antisemitism by Hamas supporters.

"A STRONG POLITICAL AND DIPLOMATIC GESTURE THAT GIVES A CHANCE TO THE TWO-STATE SOLUTION"

Noting that Belgium will join the countries that signed the "New York Declaration" supporting the two-state solution and will recognize Palestine, Prevot said, "This is a strong political and diplomatic gesture to condemn Israel's expansionist policies, settlement programs, and military occupations, and to give a chance to the two-state solution. Therefore, Belgium will recognize Palestine as a state clearly recognized in the international arena."

Nevertheless, stating that they are aware of the trauma that October 7, 2023, caused among the Israeli people, Prevot said, "The official announcement of this recognition decision by Royal Decree will take place when the last hostage is released and Hamas no longer plays any role in the Palestinian administration." Prevot also emphasized that they are ready to support the reconstruction of Palestine.
