European Union sets condition for 'peace talks' with Putin
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that if Russian President Vladimir Putin stops bombing Ukraine, peace talks could be held the very next day.

Von der Leyen, who came to Rome for campaign activities ahead of the European Parliament (EP) elections, met with young people alongside Antonio Tajani, the leader of Forza Italia (FI)—which is part of the European People's Party (EPP) group—who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
According to reports in the Italian press, Von der Leyen made assessments regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, stating, "If Putin stops the bombing, peace talks can be held the next day. But the peace process must be led by the Ukrainians. It is their right to do so."
EMPHASIS ON DEFENSE SPENDING
The EU Commission President stated that they had built a peace order after the Second World War and that Russia is challenging this.
Meanwhile, as von der Leyen arrived at the meeting venue to meet with the youth, she was met with a protest by a group of 10 people chanting "Shame on you" and "Free Palestine."
In an interview with a private television channel, Ursula von der Leyen also stated that the war that began with Russia's attack on Ukraine has changed the perception of security on their continent, noting that the issue of common defense has gained momentum and that the next long-term EU budget must take into account the need to increase defense spending.
On the other hand, the Italian press also wrote that it was noteworthy that von der Leyen did not meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during her contacts in Rome.
