European Union to end fossil fuel imports from Russia by 2027

The European Union (EU) is preparing to take a significant step toward completely ending its dependence on fossil fuels from Russia. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen shared the main outlines of this strategic plan with the public during her visit to New York. Following her meeting with US President Donald Trump, von der Leyen released a statement via social media, noting that the EU aims to reduce its fossil fuel imports from Russia to zero by 2027.
In her post, von der Leyen emphasized the need to reduce Russia's energy revenues. Highlighting the Russia-Ukraine War during her meeting with the US, von der Leyen said, "We agreed that it is necessary to rapidly reduce Russia's revenues from fossil fuels."
With the new sanctions package prepared by the European Union, a total ban will be imposed on the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia. Additionally, further restrictions will be applied to oil refineries and oil traders operating in third countries. In von der Leyen's statement, the phrase "Europe will have completely closed the chapter on Russian fossil fuels by 2027" stood out.
NEW SECURITY AND DEFENSE STEPS
The Commission President also stated that they are evaluating measures to be taken against the Kremlin's violations of European airspace. Noting that such provocations are carried out to test the EU's reaction, von der Leyen mentioned that Europe's defense capacity is being strengthened along its eastern borders.
On the other hand, developments in the Middle East were also on the agenda during the meeting. Reiterating the expectation for a humanitarian solution, von der Leyen stated, "We both agree that the suffering of civilians must end. Europe firmly supports a two-state solution."
Another important topic was the issue of missing children in Ukraine. Thanking US President Trump for his determination on this matter, von der Leyen added that Europe and the US will continue to work together to bring Ukrainian children back.
