The statement noted that no other cases have been detected yet and that the source of exposure is most likely an animal or a bird.
While an investigation to clarify the source of exposure is ongoing, the province's Provincial Health Officer Bonnie Henry stated the following:
"This is a rare event, and while this is the first H5 case detected in a person in Canada, a small number of human cases have been seen in the U.S. and elsewhere. Therefore, we are conducting a comprehensive investigation to fully understand the source of exposure here."
