United States President Donald Trump made remarks that left a mark on the agenda following his meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. In a press conference held in the Oval Office, Trump claimed that Spain has taken an obstructive stance regarding the use of US military bases. Stating that he does not accept the Madrid administration's statements on this matter, the President said, "Spain said we cannot use their bases, that is not true. We can use their bases if we want to. No one can tell us not to use the bases."
'I TOLD HIM TO CUT OFF TRADE RELATIONS WITH SPAIN'
Trump then announced that he had instructed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to cut off all trade relations with Spain. The US President said, "Spain is in terrible shape right now. I told Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to cut off all trade relations with Spain." Trump also called on European countries to cooperate more closely with the US and Israel.
The criticisms directed by Trump were not limited to Spain. He also harshly targeted the UK's long-term lease policy regarding the Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean, describing the policies of that era as "stupid."
RESPONSE FROM SPAIN
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez made his first public assessment following the developments. Pointing out that the armed conflicts in the region negatively affect global security, Sanchez said, "The Iran War has turned the world into a more insecure place. We are against this catastrophe. The war in Iran will not provide a fairer international order."
