The European Commission has taken a flash decision regarding Greece. The European Commission has decided to refer Greece to the Court of Justice of the European Union (EU) on the grounds that it has not completed the revision of its flood and river basin management plans.

Bad news for Greece has come from the European Commission. In a statement made by the Commission, it was reported that the decision to refer the country to the Court of Justice of the European Union (EU) was taken because it had not completed the revision of its flood and river basin management plans.

Stating that the plans in question are an important part of the European Green Deal, the statement said, “Member states are required to update and report their river basin management plans every 6 years.

Greece has not yet reviewed, adopted, or reported its river basin management plans,” the statement said. It was also noted in the statement that Greece has not yet reported its flood risk management plans in the same manner.

Recalling that the Commission sent a formal notice letter to Greece in February 2023, the statement said, “This was followed in November 2023 by a reasoned opinion calling on Greece to comply with its obligations and complete the review of the plans. However, the relevant plans have still not been finalized.

The Commission considers that the efforts made by the Greek authorities to date have been insufficient and is therefore referring Greece to the Court of Justice of the European Union,” it said.
