A formal investigation has been launched into former French President Nicolas Sarkozy regarding allegations of 'coercing a witness into perjury' and 'fraud' as part of an operation conducted into the financing of his 2007 election campaign.

Lebanese businessman Ziad Takieddine had claimed that he delivered a total of 5 million Euros to Sarkozy in three suitcases in 2006 and 2007, but subsequently retracted his claims suddenly and without explanation.
