Four names from Mardin to serve in the Syrian People's Assembly

The 70-member list for the constituent People's Assembly, which is part of the transition process in Syria, was announced to the public by President Ahmed Shara on July 1, 2026. Mardin Artuklu University (MAÜ) also drew attention in the list, which aims to represent broad segments of society.

In addition to Dr. Abdulhamit Alawak, a faculty member in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at MAÜ, the university's 2026 graduate Ahmet Zeydan and current students Mahir Alluş and Yasir Delwan are among the deputies who will serve during the transition period.

In a statement regarding the development, the university's rector, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özcoşar, said, "It has made us proud that members of our university are included in the 70-person list of deputies announced by President Ahmed Shara in Syria on July 1, 2026. We congratulate our constitutional law expert and faculty member of our Department of Political Science and International Relations, Dr. Abdulhamit Alawak; our 2026 graduate Mr. Ahmet Zeydan; and our current students Mr. Mahir Alluş and Mr. Yasir Delwan for their duties in the People's Assembly, and we wish them success in the reconstruction process of Syria."

While Syria's new People's Assembly consists of 70 members appointed by President Shara, it is noteworthy that 47 of these members were selected from among academics or experts. Additionally, there are 17 individuals with doctoral degrees among the members.

This new assembly, which will serve for 30 months in accordance with constitutional regulations, will hold its first meeting on Monday, July 6. Following the swearing-in ceremony at the session, the Assembly's Presidential Council will be determined, and a commission will be formed to prepare the internal regulations.
