France demands explanation from Israel regarding UNIFIL attack

Reactions continue regarding Israel's attack on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon.

In a statement issued by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was reported that France has demanded an explanation from Israel regarding the UNIFIL attack, and called on all actors involved in the conflict to ensure the safety of peacekeeping troops and to fully implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

The Ministry expressed its appreciation for the UNIFIL personnel and the French contingent for their continued commitment and professionalism under these difficult conditions.

French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Christophe Lemoine stated in his remarks, "The protection of peacekeepers is a binding obligation for all parties to the conflict," emphasizing that Paris condemns any attack on the safety of UNIFIL.

SHARP REACTIONS FROM EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

The attack carried out by Israel was met with anger, particularly in countries that provide troops to the UN peacekeeping force, such as Italy, Spain, and Ireland.

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said, “The hostile acts carried out and repeated by Israeli forces could constitute war crimes. These are extremely serious violations of international law norms and cannot be justified by any military necessity. There is no justification for the Israeli armed forces warning UNIFIL that certain bases must be evacuated. I told the ambassador to tell the Israeli government that the United Nations and Italy cannot take orders from the Israeli government.”

Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris stated, "Any firing near UN peacekeepers or facilities is a reckless act and must stop immediately." The Madrid administration also described this attack as a "serious violation" of international law.

UNIFIL ATTACK

As a result of the fire opened by Israel, a guard tower at UNIFIL's main base in Naqoura was hit, and 2 soldiers were slightly injured.
