In a statement released by French President Emmanuel Macron’s office, it was noted that the country is prepared to take an active role in a potential North Atlantic Alliance exercise. This proposal from France comes after US President Donald Trump threatened tariffs on Europe last week. Experts warn that this move by France could draw a reaction from President Trump.
Many countries in Europe had previously expressed that they would welcome symbolic military exercises in Greenland. Within this framework, France has also participated in the cooperation process by sending personnel to the island.
US President Trump frequently makes statements regarding the security of Greenland and emphasizes the importance of the island being under US control. Recently, Trump became a trending topic on social media with images prepared by an artificial intelligence application showing him planting the US flag in Greenland.
Greenland, which has a population of approximately 57 thousand, is part of the Kingdom of Denmark but has an autonomous governance model in its internal affairs. The island's defense and foreign relations are handled directly by Denmark.
The Danish Armed Forces plan to increase their military presence in Greenland throughout the year. Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated that while the possibility of a large-scale military intervention in the region is currently low, the local government and the public have begun to prepare for different scenarios.
