France signals potential suspension of partnership

France has indicated that, in light of developments in Lebanon and recent conflicts in the region, discussions regarding the suspension of the partnership agreement between the European Union and Israel could return to the European agenda.

French Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pascal Confavreux answered questions from journalists regarding the agenda during the Ministry's weekly press briefing.

'THIS CEASEFIRE IS EXTREMELY FRAGILE'

Touching upon the temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran being facilitated by Pakistan and other countries, Confavreux said, 'This temporary ceasefire is extremely fragile, and we will do everything in our power to make it permanent. It is important for negotiations to begin.'

Confavreux stated that 35 countries have expressed interest in preparing an international mission regarding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, noting that this mission would ensure the protection of freedom of navigation in the said strait.

Regarding Israel's attacks on Lebanon yesterday, Confavreux said, 'France strongly condemned Israel's large-scale and disproportionate attacks on Lebanon on April 8.'

Stating that these attacks were extremely shocking, Confavreux used the expressions, 'These attacks jeopardize the temporary ceasefire reached between the US and Iran. It is very clear to us that this ceasefire must also include Lebanon.'

Arguing that regional conflicts could end in this way, Confavreux said, 'France calls on all parties to act with extreme restraint and to seize the opportunity offered by the ceasefire.'

Underlining that France stands in solidarity with the Lebanese people, who are exposed to the consequences of a war they did not choose, Confavreux noted the following:

'Israel has the right to defend itself, but its actions are unacceptable and disproportionate, and also completely counterproductive. (These actions) are leading directly to a stalemate with 1 million displaced people, now 1,800 dead, attacks on the center of Beirut, and shocking images. (These images) essentially provide fuel for Hezbollah.'

Asserting that 'Israel's security depends on a sovereign and strong Lebanese state,' Confavreux continued as follows:

'Considering the gravity of what happened yesterday and also the situation in the West Bank, the possibility of restarting discussions at the European level regarding the suspension of the partnership agreement between the European Union and Israel cannot be ruled out. National sanctions are also necessary, so we need to talk among European partners,' he said.

Regarding US Vice President JD Vance's visit to Hungary, Confavreux commented, 'It could also be said that it is ironic for an American Vice President traveling to Hungary to oppose European election interference in national elections.'
