France to announce recognition of Palestine at UN General Assembly: Letter published

France is set to take a historic step regarding Palestine. French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will recognize the State of Palestine. Stating that the decision to recognize the state will be formally announced at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in September, Macron also released a letter addressed to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Emphasizing that France remains "faithful to its historical commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East," Macron stated that the decision to recognize Palestine is a result of this commitment. Making assessments regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Macron said, "What is most urgent today is the end of the war in Gaza and the salvation of the civilian population. Peace is possible." Stating that an immediate ceasefire is necessary, Macron said, "All hostages must be released, and large-scale humanitarian aid must be delivered to Gaza."

Touching upon the prerequisites for lasting peace, Macron stated, "The disarmament of Hamas, the securing of Gaza, and its reconstruction must be ensured." Noting that the establishment of the State of Palestine is not merely a symbol, Macron said, "Palestine must contribute to the security of all parties in the region by accepting disarmament and fully recognizing Israel."

Stating that there is no alternative to a two-state solution, Macron emphasized that the French people want peace in the Middle East and that this is the responsibility of all parties.

Simultaneously with his statement, Macron shared with the public a two-page letter addressed to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, notifying him of the decision to recognize Palestine. In the letter, Macron expressed his appreciation for the Palestinian Authority's commitments to ending the conflict in Gaza, the disarmament and withdrawal of Hamas, as well as deep reforms in Palestine and the restoration of legitimacy through elections planned for 2026.

In this context, stating in the letter that France will recognize Palestine "as a full state," Macron said, "In light of these commitments made by you, I confirm with honor that we will recognize Palestine as a full state. I will carry out this recognition at the United Nations General Assembly in September."

In the letter, emphasizing that France will not be content with only diplomatic recognition but is also determined to contribute to regional peace, Macron said, "Ensuring a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and the Palestinian Authority's ability to resume full responsibility in Gaza, as it does in the West Bank, are among our priorities."

Macron concluded the letter with the words, "Based on the determination you have shown for a lasting and just peace between the Palestinian and Israeli peoples, I offer you my highest regards."
