France has welcomed the announcement by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer that they will recognize the State of Palestine in September.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated, "The UK is today joining the process initiated by France toward the recognition of the State of Palestine. With this important decision and our joint efforts, we are putting an end to the endless cycle of violence and reopening the prospect of peace in the region. It is a fair and clear idea; nothing and no one can stand against it."
UK Prime Minister Starmer made statements to the press following an extraordinary cabinet meeting on Palestine held at the Prime Minister's Office in London, saying, "As part of the process toward peace, I confirm the following: If the Israeli government does not take steps to end the horrific situation in Gaza, does not accept a ceasefire, and does not commit to long-term sustainable peace and the revitalization of a two-state solution, the UK will recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September."
