French Senate approves enshrining abortion in the constitution: 'It will be irreversible'
The French Senate has approved the inclusion of the right to abortion in the constitution.

In a vote held in the Senate last Wednesday (February 29), the inclusion of the right to abortion in the constitution was approved. In the vote, 267 senators voted in favor, while 50 senators voted against.
On Monday, March 4, a joint parliamentary congress will be held with the participation of both Senate and National Assembly members. If three-fifths of the members vote in favor in the upcoming vote, the right to abortion will be included in the constitution in France.
Following the vote, French President Emmanuel Macron made a statement on his X account, saying, "I am committed to making women's freedom to have an abortion irreversible by enshrining it in the constitution."
The right to abortion in France is protected by a 1975 law. The law was last amended in 2022, when the legal limit for abortion was increased from 12 weeks to 14 weeks.
France's decision to include the right to abortion in its constitution comes at a time when the right to abortion is beginning to be restricted in European countries, particularly in Poland.
