Frightening warning from Greek geoscientists: Volcanic eruption alarm in Santorini... Magma has begun to exert pressure on the surface

Seismologists have issued a warning regarding the ongoing seismic activity in the Greek islands. Underwater research in Santorini has revealed that magma is exerting pressure toward the surface in the region. Experts stated that this process could lead to a magnitude 6 earthquake.

Greek seismologists Dimitris Papanikolaou and Kostas Papazachos, who observe earthquakes in the Aegean Sea on-site, provided information regarding the latest situation in Santorini. The scientists stated that the activity in and around Santorini is linked to an increase in magma pressure.

Providing an assessment on the subject, Seismologist Kostas Papazachos explained that the crust of the Aegean Sea is being subjected to pressure originating from magma. Papazachos said, 'The hot material (magma) beneath the Earth's crust is applying pressure to reach the surface.'

According to a report by the Kathimerini newspaper, emphasizing that magma movement of a similar scale has not been observed in the region before, Papazachos described the current situation as an 'unprecedented event' and used the following expressions:

''Let's imagine an egg. The shell we live on is the crust of the Aegean Sea, and we can say that there is hot material in many places within the egg white that wants to reach the surface.''

MAGMA ACTIVITY COULD LEAD TO MAJOR EARTHQUAKES

Seismologist Dimitris Papanikolaou stated that a magma section in the region has become active for unknown reasons. Noting that the magma activity is combined with tectonic forces, Papanikolaou reported that this creates additional pressure on fault lines and could cause ruptures.

Papanikolaou underscored that the greatest risk is the possibility of larger earthquakes occurring as a result of the magma's pressure, stating the following:

''There is a section consisting of magmatic material near Anhydros, at a depth of approximately 8-10 kilometers. This section is triggered, but the crust, which consists of hard rocks, makes it difficult for the magma to reach the surface for now. If the Anhydros fault, which is located near previously broken faults, also breaks, a magnitude 6 earthquake could occur.''

On the other hand, a report prepared in 2023 highlighted the risk of a landslide on the seabed southwest of Santorini. Experts also pointed out that an earthquake occurring in the region could create a tsunami danger.
