RUSSIA: ASSAD DECIDED TO STEP DOWN AND LEFT THE COUNTRY

The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Assad had decided to step down and had left the country. The latest developments in Syria were evaluated in a written statement from the ministry.

In the statement, which argued that the situation in Syria is "dramatic and worrying," it was claimed that "negotiations were held between Assad and the forces participating in the armed conflict."

The statement included the following: "As a result of the negotiations, Assad gave instructions to transfer power peacefully, decided to step down, and left the country. Russia did not participate in these negotiations."

Stating that the Russian side is in contact with all opposition forces in Syria, the statement noted the following:

"Nevertheless, we call on all relevant parties to refrain from resorting to violence and to resolve all issues through political means. In this context, Russia is in interaction with all opposition forces in Syria. We call for respect for the views of all ethnic and religious forces in Syria, and we support efforts toward establishing an inclusive political process in the context of UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which was adopted unanimously."

Pointing out that Russian military bases in Syria are in a "state of high readiness," the statement expressed that there is no serious threat to the security of these bases.

The statement also mentioned that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the safety of Russian citizens in Syria.
