Seismic activity in the Anydros Sea region, located between Greece's Santorini and Amorgos islands, has been evaluated by scientists. In a joint meeting of the Standing Scientific Committee for Seismic Risk Assessment and Reduction and the Standing Scientific Committee for Monitoring the Greek Volcanic Arc, it was stated that seismic activity in the region has relatively decreased. Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vassilis Kikilias also attended the meeting.
Scientists announced that approximately 1,300 earthquakes exceeding a magnitude of 3.0 have been recorded in the region since February 1, with the largest earthquake measuring 5.3 in magnitude.
It was stated that this seismic activity originates from NE-SW trending submarine fault lines and is part of the region's general geodynamic structure.
Furthermore, it was noted that this activity emerged as a result of a combination of tectonic movements and deeper magmatic activities.
SCHOOLS CLOSED
The committee announced that schools in Thera, Ios, Anafi, and Amorgos will remain closed until Friday, February 21, 2025.
