General strike declared in Italy following attack on Sumud Flotilla
The CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labour), a trade union confederation with over 5 million members in Italy, has declared a "general strike" for Friday in response to Israel's attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla, which included Italian citizens.

In a statement on the confederation's X account, it was stated: "The attack on civilian ships carrying Italian citizens is an extremely serious matter.
This is a blow to the constitutional order that prevents humanitarian aid and solidarity with the Palestinian people, who are being subjected to a real genocide operation by the Israeli government.
It is a direct attack on the safety and security of the workers and volunteers on board.
This is not only a crime against defenseless people, but it is also a serious situation that the Italian government has violated our constitutional principles by abandoning Italian workers in international waters," the statement said.
The statement continued, "With these words, the CGIL declares a full-day national general strike for all public and private sectors on Friday, October 3, in accordance with Article 2, Paragraph 7 of Law 146/90, in order to defend the Flotilla, constitutional values, and Gaza."
During the general strike, the CGIL stated, "Essential services will be guaranteed as specified in sector regulations."
Protests have begun in the city of Naples following the attacks on the Global Sumud Flotilla. Unions and youth groups have shut down the Naples train station.
