German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, in an interview with ZDF, stated, "We must accept the potential threat of war in Europe and therefore ensure that we are prepared for such a possibility."

The Minister said that the Russia-Ukraine war is a historic turning point for Germany, and that this should bring about a "change in mentality" in politics and society.

''BE READY FOR THE IDEA OF WAR''

Stating, "We must get used to the idea that there could be a threat of war in Europe, and this means we must be ready for war," the Minister added:

"We must be ready to defend ourselves and prepare the German armed forces and society for this. We believe that the conflicts in the Middle East and Russia's war against Ukraine will also have consequences for German society. Germany must be able to defend itself.''

The Social Democrat politician said that Germany needs to increase its defense spending and modernize its armed forces to cope with new security challenges.

GERMAN ARMY IS BEING STRENGTHENED

Pistorius also rejected accusations that Berlin has been slow to react to events that have now become a turning point.

Country officials have not only created a special fund worth 100 billion euros for the German Armed Forces but have also changed the structure of the army. Pistorius added that the army had been neglected for a long time.

The Minister said, "Unfortunately, nothing that was ruined in 30 years can be fixed in 19 months," and gave assurances that Germany would be in a completely different situation by the end of this decade.
