Germany grants record number of citizenships: Turks at the top!
It has been announced that approximately 200,000 foreigners acquired German citizenship in 2023. There has also been an increase in the number of Israelis applying for German citizenship since October 7. Turks ranked second after Syrians in the number of citizenships granted.

It has been reported that approximately 200,000 people acquired German citizenship last year.
In a statement from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), it was stated that approximately 200,100 foreigners were naturalized in Germany in 2023, marking the highest figure since the year 2000.
The statement noted that the number of naturalizations in 2023 increased by approximately 31,000 compared to 2022, and emphasized that German citizenship was granted to individuals from 157 different nationalities last year, with 75,000 of those naturalized being Syrians.
10,700 TURKS BECAME GERMAN CITIZENS
The statement recorded that the number of Turks living in Germany who acquired German citizenship was 10,700, placing them in second place after Syrians.
However, the statement highlighted that there was a decrease of 3,500 in the number of Turks who acquired German citizenship compared to 2022, and noted that the number of Ukrainians living in the country who were naturalized was 5,900.
INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF ISRAELIS APPLYING FOR CITIZENSHIP
On the other hand, it was reported that the number of Israelis applying for German citizenship has increased since October 7.
According to a report by the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND), 6,869 Israelis applied to become German citizens in the first 4 months of this year alone.
While the number of Israelis who received citizenship in all of 2022 was 5,670, this figure was recorded as 9,129 in 2023.
With a law passed in Germany 3 years ago, descendants of Jews murdered during the National Socialist era are provided with an easier path to naturalization.

In the attacks Israel has carried out on the Gaza Strip since October 7, at least 36,050 Palestinians, including 15,239 children and 10,093 women, have been killed, and 81,026 people have been injured.
