Germany to purchase new missiles from the US

Speaking at the Federal Parliament in Berlin, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the outcomes of the NATO Summit were more positive than expected. Merz emphasized that the alliance is acting in unity and security.

Pointing out that the responsibilities undertaken by European countries regarding collective defense are increasing, Merz expressed that Germany plans to raise its defense budget to 5 percent of its gross domestic product earlier than targeted. Arguing that these increased resources are necessary for peace and security, Merz stated, "If we do not live in freedom and peace, even the best social security system would have no meaning."

Touching upon the agreement made with the US within the scope of the NATO Summit, Chancellor Merz announced that American Tomahawk missiles would be purchased and deployed in Germany. Merz said, "Thus, we are closing an important strategic gap in our defense. At the same time, we will also work to develop our own European systems and deploy them in Europe."

Emphasizing that transatlantic cooperation will continue, Merz said that European countries should be primarily responsible for their own security. He stated, "We are primarily responsible for our own security."

Mentioning that Germany also aims for growth in the defense industry, Merz noted that Canada's order of 12 new submarines from a consortium formed by German and Norwegian companies is one of the largest international exports in the country's history in terms of the defense industry. He noted that this agreement will provide job opportunities for thousands of people for many years.

Announcing that comprehensive reform preparations are underway in the fields of economy, taxes, pensions, and health, Merz underlined that the implementation of these reforms is essential to overcome the security and economic problems Germany is facing.
