Germany's decision on Palestine

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz addressed the issue of recognizing an independent Palestinian state during a press conference held following his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. 

Merz stated, "At this time, the necessary conditions for recognizing an independent Palestinian state have not been met. Therefore, Germany will not support this initiative for the time being."

According to information reported by the German Press Agency (dpa), Germany views the recognition of a Palestinian state as one of the steps to be taken in the process toward a two-state solution where Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side in peace. According to Berlin, the prerequisites for this step toward a solution must be met.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced in a statement in July that his country would recognize Palestine as a state at the United Nations General Assembly to be held in September. French President Emmanuel Macron had similarly indicated that he planned to recognize Palestine.
