Ginger cats found to have missing genetic codes: Scientists investigate
Japanese and American scientists have determined that the reason ginger cats are usually male is due to a missing section in their genetic code.

Scientists from Kyushu University in Japan and Stanford University in the US conducted two separate studies on cats, as the pigmentation characteristics that give ginger cats their yellow color in their fur and eyes are sex-linked.
Reaching the same conclusion, the scientists found that there is a missing section in the genetic code of yellow and orange-colored cats, and that this deficiency leads to the ARHGAP36 gene being more active.
Noting that the ARHGAP36 gene causes the production of lighter color pigments in the skin, fur, and eyes of cats, the scientists stated that the fact that male cats are more frequently ginger is due to this gene being carried on the X chromosome.
The scientists noted that because males have only one X chromosome, a single missing piece can turn the cat completely ginger, whereas in female cats, the presence of two X chromosomes usually results in tortoiseshell or calico fur patterns.
Stating that the ARHGAP36 gene plays an important role in the development of the brain and hormone glands, the scientists expressed that this genetic change could also have an impact on health issues or the temperament of the cats.
The findings of the research were published in the journal "Current Biology".
