Israel has launched a ground operation dubbed 'Northern Arrows' targeting Hezbollah elements in southern Lebanon. Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have escalated in the Middle East.
After detonating pagers and radios used by Hezbollah in Lebanon on September 17, Israel killed Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah in an airstrike in Beirut on September 27.
Most recently, Israel began a ground operation targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon during the night hours.
In a statement from the Israeli military, it was said, "Limited and targeted raids have begun against Hezbollah targets. The air force and artillery units are supporting the operation. The targets are points that pose a threat to northern Israel."
While it was announced that the operation is named "Northern Arrows," it was stated that it would proceed simultaneously with the situation in Gaza.
According to the Lebanese news agency NNA, Israeli artillery units struck the Al-Wazzani, Al-Khiam, and Marjayoun plains in the south for 2 hours.
Israeli warplanes conducted an airstrike on the Kawkaba-Marjayoun highway, causing the road to be closed to traffic.
Israeli warplanes also conducted intense low-altitude flights over the capital, Beirut, and carried out 8 airstrikes on the Dahiyeh district. Smoke rose from the skies over Dahiyeh following the attacks. Reports indicated that many buildings were destroyed in the strikes.
US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller announced that Israel had informed the US about a series of limited ground operations it planned in Lebanon.
In his statement, Miller said, “We have had conversations with them about these operations, but I will let them speak to the timing and the purpose of them. They have informed us about a series of operations. They told us at this time that these are limited operations focusing on Hezbollah infrastructure near the border, but we are in constant conversation about that.”
Miller also called on both sides to refrain from steps that would escalate tensions and to accept a ceasefire.
