Two explosions occurred on the road leading to the cemetery in Kerman province, where a memorial ceremony was being held for the 4th anniversary of the death of Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who was killed in a US attack in Baghdad in January 2020.
It was initially stated that 103 people died in the explosions near the cemetery where Soleimani's grave is located, but official authorities later updated this figure to 95. A total of 211 people were also injured in the attack.
