Brazil has deported a Hamas member and his family at the request of the US Department of State.
Brazilian Federal Police sources reported that 37-year-old Muslim M. A. Abuumar, along with his wife, who is 7 months pregnant, his son, and his mother-in-law, were detained upon entering the country at Sao Paulo's Guarulhos Airport and were sent back to Doha, the capital of Qatar, on a Qatar Airways flight yesterday.
Sources stated that the deportation request came from the US Department of State, explaining that it had been proven before a judge that the Palestinian man had deep ties to Hamas.
HE IS ON THE TERRORIST WATCH LIST
According to an injunction filed by Abuumar's lawyer, Bruno Henrique de Moura, the Palestinian family was detained by police upon arrival at Guarulhos Airport without any arrest warrant. Moura stated that the Brazilian police "accepted the US's politically motivated request" and that it was based on Abuumar's name appearing on the US government's terrorist watch list.
Moura said, "The US uses this list to make life difficult for pro-Palestinian activists."
It was stated that Abuumar had come to visit his brother, who lives in Brazil. Ibrahim Al Zeben, the Palestinian Ambassador to Brasilia, said that no one had officially contacted the embassy regarding Abuumar.
Judge Milenna da Cunha, who approved Abuumar's deportation order, referred in her decision to social media posts showing Abuumar meeting with Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh in Doha, the capital of Qatar. The decision stated that Abuumar was in charge of the Asia Middle East Center, that his wife was Malaysian, and that his children were born in Malaysia.
The decision also noted that the Brazilian police suspected that Abuumar had traveled to Brazil with his family so that his wife could give birth and their children could become Brazilian citizens.
It was stated that Abuumar first came to Brazil last year on January 1, the day Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was sworn into office.
