A statement from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reported that the rate of homelessness in the country increased by 18 percent in 2024 compared to the previous year, marking the most significant increase recorded in recent years.
According to the department's report on the matter, a total of 771 thousand people in the U.S. are living as homeless in emergency shelters, safe havens, transitional housing programs, or on the streets.
The report stated that the reasons for the record increase in the homelessness rate in 2024 include factors such as the housing price crisis in the country, rising inflation, stagnant wages, systemic racism, and inequalities related to public health.
The report, which explained that the rate of homelessness among families with children increased by 39 percent, noted that this rate increased by 33 percent (approximately 150 thousand people) among children under the age of 18.
