In Syria, jihadist groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) captured the capital, Damascus, on December 8 following attacks that began on November 27, overthrowing the Bashar al-Assad administration.
Following HTS's establishment of control in Damascus, Bashar al-Assad left Syria and took refuge in Russia with his family.
In Syria, the Sednaya Prison, which was identified with the Assad regime and known for its torture, was raided and prisoners were released, bringing the torture and deaths in the prisons to light.
HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani, who played a leading role in the overthrow of the Assad administration, stated that those responsible for torture and deaths in the prisons would not be able to escape justice.
According to NTV, in a statement published on the state broadcaster's Telegram channel, al-Julani said there would be no amnesty or forgiveness for regime officials involved in the torture.
The HTS leader said, “We will pursue them in Syria, and we ask countries to hand over those who have fled so that we can ensure justice.”
