Hungary's new leader Magyar: Hungary will once again be a strong ally in the EU and NATO

Peter Magyar, leader of the opposition Tisza party, which emerged victorious in Sunday's elections in Hungary, delivered a victory speech in the capital, Budapest.

Starting his speech with the message that the winner of the elections was Hungary, Magyar said, "We have toppled the Orban regime together and liberated Hungary. We have taken our homeland back."

Stating that Tisza has achieved a historic success for Hungarian democracy and was elected with a record number of votes, Magyar said, "All signs indicate that we will have a two-thirds majority in the new parliament. This is a mandate that will ensure the transition takes place in the most effective, peaceful, and smooth way possible. We are grateful to the three million three hundred thousand people who trusted us."

Comparing his struggle against Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, whose 16-year rule has come to an end, to the battle between David and Goliath, the young leader said, "Two years ago, a few people set out, and in the end, love won in the battle between David and Goliath. Because in the end, love always wins."

"Russians go home!" chants were heard

During his speech, where the crowd chanted "Russians go home," Magyar said, "Hungary wants to be a European country again. It wants to be a state that is not dependent on any other country, a country where success is valued." Stating that they have received a mandate to fix the country and heal its wounds, the young leader said, "We see what has been done in the economy, healthcare, education, child protection, security, and transportation. We have a massive task ahead of us." Addressing Hungarian Prime Minister Orban in his victory speech, Magyar said, "From now on, he should act as a caretaker government and not take any decisions that would tie the hands of the new government. We hope the transition will be short. If any important decision or issue concerning the country arises during this time, they should not hesitate to contact me. The Hungarian people have decided on a change of system. Those who are part of this system should withdraw from public life."

Stating that they will restore the country's checks and balances with a two-thirds majority in parliament, Magyar said, "We will not allow anyone to seize a free Hungary ever again. We will restore the functioning and independence of the institutions that guarantee democracy. Hungary will once again be a strong ally in the EU and NATO. Hungary will once again be a strong ally that defends its own interests. Because this country's place has been in Europe for a thousand years. We will strengthen the Visegrad Group cooperation again. In this direction, my first visit will be to Poland. My second visit will be to Vienna. And the third will be to Brussels to bring back the EU funds that belong to the Hungarian people."

Stating that he will work with European leaders and re-establish relations with his neighbors, Magyar said, "It is time to correct the mistakes of our predecessors. We will heal the historical wounds."

The Tisza leader, who said the new government will also liberate the judiciary, added, "Those who robbed the country will have to be held accountable. Those who incited Hungarians against Hungarians will have to be held accountable. Those who sold out the country will have to be held accountable."
