India summons Iranian ambassador to ministry following ship attacks in the Strait of Hormuz

The Indian government announced that two ships subjected to an armed attack in the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has closed to ship traffic once again, were Indian-flagged oil tankers.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs reported that following the attack, Iran's Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, was summoned to the ministry. During the meeting, it was stated that Indian Ministry of External Affairs official Vikram Misri conveyed India's "deep concern" regarding the attack on the ships to Ambassador Fathali.

According to the ministry statement, Misri underscored the importance India places on the safety of commercial vessels and seafarers, and reminded that Iran had previously facilitated the safe passage of some ships heading to India.

Reiterating concerns regarding a serious incident such as opening fire on commercial vessels, the Indian official requested that the ambassador convey India's views to Iranian authorities and that the process of facilitating the passage of ships heading to India through the Strait be resumed as soon as possible.

The ministry statement noted that the Iranian ambassador stated he would convey the aforementioned concerns to his authorities.

Various sources had alleged that the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) opened fire on at least 2 commercial ships attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC had announced hours earlier that the Strait of Hormuz was closed to ship traffic again due to the ongoing US blockade.
