The "luxury watch" investigation in Peru has led to a resignation. As the luxury watch investigation into President Dina Boluarte continues in Peru, Peruvian Interior Minister Victor Torres has resigned.
In a statement following a cabinet meeting, Torres stated that his resignation was due to "family and health issues," adding, "I am leaving in peace with clean hands."
On March 30, a raid was conducted on Boluarte's home upon the instructions of the Prosecutor General's Office. Police broke down the door with a battering ram. The operation sought luxury watches that Boluarte had not declared as assets.
LUXURY WATCH INVESTIGATION
A preliminary investigation was launched into Boluarte two weeks ago after reports circulated in the Peruvian media that she had been wearing various luxury watches.
The purpose of the investigation was to determine whether there were grounds for a formal investigation against the president. Boluarte, who faced questions about how she could afford numerous luxury watches, had stated that she bought the watches with money she had earned working since she was 18 years old.
Boluarte had stated, "I entered the palace with clean hands and I will leave with clean hands."
Dina Boluarte was appointed to replace former Peruvian President Castillo after he was removed from office by Congress on December 7, 2022. Demonstrations were held across the country demanding Boluarte's resignation and the holding of elections, and more than 50 people lost their lives in the resulting incidents.
