Iran cuts off natural gas supply to Iraq

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity has announced that natural gas imports from Iran have completely stopped, resulting in a loss of between 4,000 and 4,500 megawatts in the electrical system. This development has had a significant impact, as Iraq is heavily dependent on natural gas for its energy production. Approximately one-third of the electricity generated in the country is produced by power plants fueled by natural gas imported from Iran.
The ministry stated that following the interruption of the natural gas flow, they are working in coordination with the Ministry of Oil to supply the power plants using domestic alternative fuels and that production is being kept under control. These steps were taken to ensure continuity in the energy supply.
This situation in Iraq's energy infrastructure once again highlights the country's vulnerability regarding energy security. Officials aim to develop long-term strategies to reduce dependence on foreign energy supplies.
