WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE TREATY ON THE NON-PROLIFERATION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS?
The purpose of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote international cooperation for the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and to advance the goal of nuclear disarmament.
The treaty, which first entered into force in 1970, was extended indefinitely in 1995.
The treaty aims to increase global security by compelling nuclear-weapon states to take steps toward disarmament.
Iran is a party to the UN's Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and has committed under this treaty not to produce bombs.
