Social media move from Iran: Imposed restrictions are being lifted

Restrictions imposed on social media platforms in Iran are being lifted. The Iranian Supreme Council of Cyberspace held a meeting today to address the bans on social media platforms.

With the decision taken unanimously by the Council, the restrictions on WhatsApp and Google Play have been lifted. In its statement, the Council noted that bans on other social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and X will remain in place.

Iranian Minister of Information and Communications Technology Sattar Hashemi announced on his social media account that the first step toward lifting internet restrictions in the country had been taken, stating, “Today, the first step toward lifting internet limitations was taken. More will follow.”

BANS HAD BEEN IMPOSED ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Protests that began in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022 led to the implementation of bans on social media platforms. During this period, the government announced a transition to a national internet network and blocked access to many social media applications. President Masoud Pezeshkian, who had promised to lift internet restrictions during his election campaign, had stated that the bans were having negative effects on the public.
