Following a pause in the indirect Iran-US talks held in Geneva, Switzerland, under the mediation of Oman, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei made an assessment to state television. Stating that the negotiations have been continuing intensively since the morning hours, Baghaei said, "We held meetings for approximately three hours with the participation of Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi and International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi."
"Important and viable proposals have been brought to the table"
Noting that both delegations left the negotiation room about an hour ago, Baghaei said, "The talks are expected to resume around 17:30-18:00 local time. Both delegations needed to hold consultations with their capitals. Important and viable proposals have been brought to the table regarding both the nuclear file and the lifting of sanctions. Our teams regarding the lifting of sanctions and our experts on nuclear technical issues continued their work in their respective fields. The process is being handled under technical and political headings. Contact with capitals is required to finalize some of the proposals. We expect a clearer picture to emerge after the meetings to be held this evening," he stated.
"What matters to us is the result"
Touching upon the statements coming from US officials, Baghaei said, "Contradictory statements lead to the continuation of doubt and uncertainty regarding the process. What matters to us is the result. Our position in the negotiations is clear. We have maintained the same line from the beginning and have displayed a stance consistent with what we have said. However, it is not possible to see the same clarity on the other side," he expressed.
"The fundamental element of the agreement must be the lifting of sanctions"
Emphasizing that the negotiations only cover the nuclear issue, Baghaei said, "While the nuclear file is being addressed, the Iranian people's right to benefit from nuclear energy for peaceful purposes will certainly be on the agenda. This issue is an inseparable part of all ongoing talks. The issue of sanctions is also clear. Our people have suffered serious harm due to unjust and cruel sanctions. Therefore, the fundamental element of any agreement to be reached must be the lifting of sanctions," he said.
"The negotiations are at a critical stage"
Stating that the talks are continuing in a serious atmosphere, Baghaei said, "We expect concrete and viable steps on the main topics to be discussed this evening and in the subsequent contacts. The negotiations are at a critical stage. Various issues have been put on the table and some new proposals have been brought up. For some of these proposals, contact with capitals is necessary. A clearer picture will emerge after the meetings to be held in the evening," he said.
