Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, speaking at a meeting held by his party, threatened to reoccupy Southern Lebanon if Hezbollah's attacks on Israel do not stop.

According to a report in Israel's Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, Smotrich stated, "We must issue a clear ultimatum to Hezbollah to completely cease fire and withdraw beyond the Litani River (in southern Lebanon)," and added:

"If Hezbollah does not fully respond to our demands, the Israeli army must launch an offensive to defend the northern towns, including a ground incursion and military control of a zone in southern Lebanon, deep within Lebanese territory."

There has been no statement from Hezbollah regarding Smotrich's remarks.

In the clashes that have been taking place along the border between the Israeli army and Hezbollah since October 8, 2023, it was recently announced that 300 Hezbollah members, as well as 61 Lebanese civilians, 19 members of the Amal Movement, 13 members of Hamas, 15 members of Islamic Jihad, along with 14 Israeli soldiers and 10 Israeli civilians, have been killed.
