In a statement posted on its social media account, the Israeli army alleged that a Palestinian child had 'thrown an explosive device' at Israeli soldiers in the town of Al-Yamun, near Jenin, in the West Bank. The statement noted that, in response, Israeli soldiers 'opened fire and killed' 12-year-old Palestinian Mahmoud Abu al-Hayja. With this statement, the Israeli army has admitted to killing a child.

Since October 7, 2023, 955 Palestinians, including 171 children, have lost their lives in attacks by Israeli soldiers and Israeli settlers occupying Palestinian lands in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

During this period, over 7,000 Palestinians have been injured, and 16,400 people have been detained.

Following the ceasefire in Gaza that came into effect on January 19, 2025, the Israeli army launched an offensive it dubbed 'Iron Wall' on Tuesday, January 21, against the city of Jenin and its refugee camp in the occupied northern West Bank.
