Because if you are strong enough, ruthless enough, and powerful enough, evil can defeat good. Aggression can crush moderation." These remarks were quickly criticized by numerous users on social media and became a subject of debate.
STATEMENT ISSUED FOLLOWING BACKLASH
Following the growing backlash, Prime Minister Netanyahu issued a statement in English on the social media platform X, expressing that his words had been misunderstood. Stating, "I did not belittle Jesus Christ," Netanyahu argued that the expressions he quoted actually belonged to historian Will Durant. "Durant, who was an ardent admirer of Jesus Christ, stated that morality alone is not enough to guarantee survival," Netanyahu said, emphasizing that his intention was not to belittle any religious value or figure.
The same statement also included the words, "A morally superior civilization can still be destroyed by a ruthless enemy if it does not have the power to defend itself." Netanyahu concluded his message by saying, "It was not intended as an insult of any kind."

Netanyahu's remarks resonated not only in Israel but also internationally.
