Kuwaiti Emir al-Sabah dissolves parliament, suspends constitution

Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah announced that he has dissolved parliament and suspended certain articles of the constitution.

Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah has announced a decision regarding parliament.

Speaking on state television, al-Sabah announced that he has dissolved parliament. 

Addressing his decision regarding the Kuwaiti constitution, al-Sabah stated that he has suspended certain articles of the constitution for a period not exceeding 4 years, during which all aspects of the democratic process will be reviewed. Al-Sabah said, “Kuwait has been going through difficult times recently. 

This leaves no room for hesitation or delay in making difficult decisions to save the country and secure its higher interests,” he said.

State television reported that the powers of the National Assembly will be assumed by the Emir and the country's cabinet.
