Kuwaiti Emir Sabah accepts government's resignation

Kuwaiti Emir Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has accepted the government's resignation following parliamentary elections.

According to a report by Kuwait's official news agency KUNA, the Emir accepted the resignation of the government led by Prime Minister Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, which had resigned yesterday following the announcement of the results of the April 4 elections on Friday.

According to the decree issued by the Emir, the government whose resignation has been accepted will continue to serve in a caretaker capacity until a new cabinet is formed.

The first regular session of the country's 18th legislative term is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, April 17.

Citizens in Kuwait went to the polls on Thursday, April 4, for parliamentary elections.

The government had submitted its resignation yesterday in accordance with Article 57 of the Constitution to allow for the formation of a new government following the elections.

Voter turnout in the Kuwaiti general elections was recorded at 62 percent, and one woman was elected to the 50-seat parliament.

Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah had dissolved the Parliament on February 15.

In the decree regarding the dissolution of Parliament, Kuwaiti Emir Sabah stated: "This decree is issued in accordance with Article 107 of the Constitution, due to the Parliament's violation of constitutional principles, failure to show the necessary respect for high offices, and the deliberate use of offensive and uncontrolled language."
