Lai Ching-te's victory in Taiwan

In Taiwan, Lai Ching-te, who rejects China's sovereignty claims, has won the presidential election. Lai's Democratic Progressive Party has achieved an unprecedented success within Taiwan's current electoral system, competing for a third term. As the sovereignty dispute with China continues, the people of Taiwan went to the polls for presidential and parliamentary elections. Lai Ching-te, who won the presidential election, surpassed Hou Yu-ih, the candidate of Taiwan's main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT).

According to the election results, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party received more than 5 million votes, placing it ahead of the opposition KMT party and the Taiwan People's Party. KMT candidate Hou Yu-ih conceded defeat in the election and stated that he wanted to apologize to his supporters.

The Democratic Progressive Party, led by Lai, argues that Taiwan has a distinct identity, rejects China's sovereignty claims, and has achieved an unprecedented success for a third term. China, meanwhile, had accused Lai of being a dangerous separatist before the election and had rejected his calls for dialogue.
