Russia has updated its list of terrorists and extremists. Former World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov has also been added to the list.
Kasparov, a Russian citizen with a Jewish father and an Armenian mother, was the world chess champion from 1985 to 2000. Ending his chess career in 2005, Kasparov became involved in political opposition movements against Russian President Vladimir Putin.
After living abroad for some time, Kasparov obtained Croatian citizenship in 2014.
Following the start of the Russia-Ukraine War, Kasparov, who criticized President Putin, had called for "military support for Ukraine against Russia and the collapse of the Russian economy."
Kasparov was added to the "foreign agent" list in Russia on May 20, 2022.
