In the U.S. state of Tennessee, 50-year-old death row inmate Christa Pike, whose execution attempt by lethal injection resulted in failure, continues to receive treatment in the hospital. Pike's lawyers announced that about a week after the incident, their client is conscious and able to speak.
According to the statement, Pike received two doses of pentobarbital during the execution attempt in Nashville on September 30. After the procedure failed, Pike was removed from the execution chamber and taken to the hospital; it was stated that she remained on a ventilator for a period.
In their assessment of Pike's health status, her lawyers stated, "Her recovery is medically unprecedented. The estimated recovery process is not yet clear, but we are expecting at least a long recovery process."
The lawyers reported that "serious damage" occurred in Pike's arms and that she is being kept handcuffed to her hospital bed. Officials, meanwhile, stated that the recovery process is ongoing and that the prognosis regarding her long-term health status has not yet been clarified.
