Macron calls 'freedom of speech' defense 'nonsense'

According to a report by Bloomberg, as countries like France and Britain consider the option of banning social media for children, the addictive designs of these platforms are also being debated. 

While the US has reacted to the discussions on bans in European countries, it has argued that restricting social media platforms would amount to 'censorship of freedom of speech'. 

Responding to the US defense of 'freedom of speech' at an artificial intelligence conference held in New Delhi, Macron said regarding the platforms: 'Not knowing how their algorithms are built, how they are tested, and where they will lead you can have very serious democratic consequences.' 

Macron continued his remarks as follows: 'Some say they are defending freedom of speech. Fine, we support completely transparent, free algorithms. Freedom of speech is complete nonsense if no one knows how you are being directed within this so-called freedom. Especially if you are being directed from one hate speech to another. I want to see a transparent path between these different discourses, and I also want there to be a kind of public order. I want to prevent racist speech, hate speech, and the like.'
