Macron reacts to Israel's attacks on Syria

Macron hosted Syrian President Ahmed Shara at the Elysee Palace, who was making his first visit to Europe in Paris. 

Holding a joint press conference with Shara after their meeting, Macron stated that France has a long history with Syria and expressed that they have always supported the aspirations of the Syrian people, voiced since 2011, for a free and unified Syria where everyone, regardless of their origin, religion, or status, can enjoy equal citizenship.

Noting that international justice must be sought regarding the horrific crimes of the ousted Assad regime and that France has done so, Macron said, "The fall of Bashar al-Assad was a relief and a joy for all of us. Now it remains for you to overcome an extremely difficult situation that involves finding the path to peace and unity for the people again," adding that they want a peaceful transition process that includes all segments of Syrian society. 

Pointing to the recent events in Syria in areas inhabited by the Druze community, Macron conveyed to Shara his expectation that all Syrians be protected unconditionally and that the perpetrators of these incidents be prosecuted and punished. 

Stating that Syria cannot regain stability without economic recovery and infrastructure improvements, Macron said, "Syrians, including those in the diaspora, want to contribute to the reconstruction of their country." 

"WE WILL CONTINUE TO GRADUALLY LIFT"

Macron stated that the European Union (EU) will continue to "gradually lift sanctions" on the country for Syria's reconstruction and that the US should also be encouraged to do so. 

In addition, Macron emphasized the importance of providing guarantees for the proper use of international funds to be given to Syria. 

Macron used the expression, "Syria's stability and unity are important for the stability of the Middle East and the security of the French and Europeans." 

Stating that DAESH continues to be the "most serious terrorist threat" in terms of "international peace and security," Macron noted that they need Syria's cooperation in the fight against DAESH. 

Describing the terrorist organization PKK/YPG, which uses the name SDF, as an "indispensable partner of the international coalition against DAESH," Macron said he welcomed the agreement reached between the Damascus administration and the SDF on March 10. 

On the other hand, Macron stated that Syria should not be a sanctuary for armed terrorist groups and that the Syrian administration will continue to work in cooperation with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for the detection and destruction of chemical weapons remaining from the Bashar al-Assad regime.

Stating that it is necessary to fight together against Hezbollah as well, Macron said, "An important part of our cooperation is to increase, intensify, and systematize the fight against Hezbollah, to fight against the influence of Iran and its proxies in the region, and to help the stability of Syria and Lebanon."

Responding to criticisms regarding Shara's visit to France, Macron said, "What I see is that there is a leader present." Macron reminded that Shara ended the Assad regime, which France fought against and condemned.

Regarding a question about what steps France will take for foreign fighters and their families in Syria, Macron stated that they are in cooperation with Syria and said, "It is still too early to answer this question in detail, but it is clear that France will be a reliable partner in this process regarding the provision of justice and ensuring the security of the French and Syrian people."

Regarding Israel's attacks on Syria, Macron made the following assessments:

"As for the bombings and (territorial) violations, I think these are bad practices. I do not think you can ensure your own security by violating the territorial integrity of your neighbors. I will not apply double standards to anyone on this matter. I want a closer dialogue to be established with Israel."
