Major support for Ekrem İmamoğlu from Germany: 'This is not a legal matter, it is political interference in the judiciary'

Protests against the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and hundreds of officials in Turkey continue across the country and abroad. Citizens who have filled squares in many Turkish cities since March 19 are reacting to the politicization of the judiciary and the threat to democratic values.

FRANKFURT MAYOR ALSO ATTENDED THE RALLY

A similar protest was held today in the German city of Frankfurt. Approximately 3,000 people attended the demonstration held at Hauptwache Square under the leadership of the CHP Germany Federation. Frankfurt Mayor Mike Josef, Left Party (Die Linke) MP Janine Wissler, and CHP Frankfurt Association President Ercan Beğen also supported the protest.

'THIS IS POLITICS INTERFERING WITH THE LAW'

Speaking at the rally, CHP Frankfurt Association President Ercan Beğen stated that the process was not legal, but entirely a political intervention:

'Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu has been subjected to the same lawlessness as hundreds of others, has not been questioned for days in an unlawful manner, and has been faced with a process that has practically turned into torture. This is not a legal matter; this is political interference in the judiciary.'

'THE SYSTEM IS DRIVING YOUNG PEOPLE TOWARD PESSIMISM'

Citizens among the participants also shared their views on the struggle for democracy in Turkey. A participant named Hüseyin Önal emphasized that the hopes of young people for the future are being destroyed by the system and called on the public to take action:

'As long as this order does not change, there will always be anxiety about the future for young people. The system is driving young people toward this pessimism. For the system to change, the public needs to consciously claim its power.'

Another participant, Vahap, stated that young people are the greatest power carrying hope:

'Nothing is over yet. Everything can be beautiful. Hope lies in the youth. We must put a stop to this course of events.'

'I HAVE HOPE FOR TURKEY, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH'

Another participant named Ali Çolak expressed that the public has become aware of the injustices that have been going on for years:

''A year from now, Turkey's character, culture, and many things will have changed. People are aware of many things right now. They have been following the lies for years. I have hope for Turkey. Enough is enough.''

The rally in Frankfurt took place simultaneously with the ongoing protests in Turkey. Thousands of people filling the squares in Istanbul, Ankara, İzmir, and many other cities continue to call for justice against the unlawful detentions.
