It was reported that an object fell near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in eastern Poland, a NATO member, approximately 95 kilometers from the Ukrainian border on Thursday morning. The incident occurred during hours when Russia was conducting large-scale attacks on various regions of Ukraine with long-range weapons.
According to a statement from the Polish military, the object fell in an uninhabited area near the village in the Lublin region. Polish police announced that local residents reported hearing a loud explosion.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that initial assessments indicate the fallen object could be a missile belonging to Russia. Tusk stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact type of the missile and who launched it.
''All signs point to this being a Russian Kh-101 ballistic missile, but we want to be 100 percent sure about the type of missile and who launched it.''
Poland had announced shortly before the object fell that it had scrambled fighter jets due to Russia's attacks on Ukraine. The military reported that air defense systems had detected at least 12 missiles in western Ukraine that could pose a potential threat to Polish airspace.
The incident has brought security alarms back to the agenda in NATO countries near the border line in the Russia-Ukraine war. Polish authorities state that a clearer explanation is expected following technical examinations regarding the nature of the fallen object.
